The Terry Schoenling Home for Mothers and Infants
The Terry Schoenling Home for Mothers and Infants Program (Terry’s Home) serves pregnant and postpartum women who have substance use disorder, and their newborn babies. First Step Home’s pregnant clients are especially vulnerable to their situations, as they are often poor, socially isolated, and overwhelmed.
Terry’s Home is a part of the Maternal Addiction Program, and serves as a place for women to complete their pregnancies and live in a safe environment during the critical first three months of their baby’s life.
The Terry’s Home program directly serves the newborn babies, virtually all of whom were exposed to opiates in utero; this means the babies are born with varying degrees of withdrawal symptoms. Services provided include weekly meetings with a nurse for mother and baby, and all other services for pregnant and postpartum women. These include: classes and groups in parenting, breastfeeding, safe sleep, bonding, vocational training, and relapse prevention.
